Tranquility
TQworld

Have you ever wanted to fly around in a virtual environment with nothing better to do than bounce off surfaces trying to intercept a glowing spinning orb?

Neither had I until I came across Tranquility, and now I can't stop.

After downloading a Game Browser from TQworld's website I chose the demo mode and was instantly transported to the game arena, a two dimensional grid with multiple three dimensional stacks stretching up off into a space full of tens of thousands of stars. The slightest movement of your mouse moves your point of reference either to the left, right, forwards or backwards, and a sustained click of the mouse, or space bar, moves you down for a bounce off the grid and up towards one of the myriad of suspended surfaces which you can ascend above and drop down onto, or just pass through, to gain more height and get you closer to your goal, the glowing orb which is your passport to the next level.

The reason why we're reviewing Tranquility at electronicmusic.com is because there's an AI with a rudimentary understanding of musical rules built into their Game Server, the bit at TQworld HQ which sends game information across the internet to your Game Browser. Any one of the twelve megabytes of CD quality stereo samples within the Browser can then be triggered in an order it knows will create pleasing sounds whenever you make contact with a game piece. It also generates a unique soundtrack for every new level which, although decidedly new agey, fits very well with what's going on in front of your eyes.

Capable of playing sixty four sounds at once the possibilities are relatively endless, but at this time I don't see a way to get new samples in there, or replace existing ones, which is something I would hope the developers are considering for future releases. There is a preferences feature enabled when you become a member which may allow you to choose different styles of soundtrack, which I must stress really isn't that bad for an AI.
