John Digweed - Global Underground 001 Sydney
Thrive
This double mix CD is the first in a series that Thrive is set to put out in the first half of 1999, with John Digweed's 001 Sydney getting things off to a great start.
Featuring exactly the kind of high-energy big-production sound that has helped put Digweed ahead of the pack, 001 Sydney promises to reach an even bigger audience than the one which welcomed the release of the 1997 Northern Exposure set he co-authored with Sasha, a double CD that helped set the standard for many of today's DJ's.
With the second of the two CD's finding favor among those here at electronicmusic.com there's also much to be heard on the first, recorded at The Metro in Sydney, with theme after theme surfacing amid the kind of beats that are unable to fail. Thrown in for good measure throughout the CD set are a myriad of samples, sound effects and sound bytes which help spice up the already lush and multilayered sound spectrum, but when Digweed drops those pads into place from out of the blue, as he does about one and a half minutes into the excellent mix of Pako and Frederik's Steel Blue, I wonder why I'm not out there listening to all this in one hundred degree heat surrounded by several thousand people.
