Luke Slater - Freek Funk

Luke Slater has put together a fast paced constantly changing collection of music which is impressive. Hailing from West London, he's certainly joined the ranks of those electronic music makers who change direction whenever they feel the need.

Immediately on the heels of the opening track comes a strangely disjointed piece that has to be used in a robot gone wrong movie. Before I notice it there I am at track five. I'm not sure how I got there, I thought I was still listening to the same piece. Are You There throws plenty of samples into the mix for good measure while moving it all along with a motivating dance track.

Engine One really allows Slater's colours show through with incessant white noise style distortion and a pounding bass beat this one never really lets you off until the sudden rush of superheated air gets you out to the title track. All billowy and ethereal you really can't fault him for mixing it all up. After a bit the danceable begin again but not before those Aaah pads set the scene for some interesting sample work.

With most tracks starting out headed one way and ending up headed another I can see the bulk of this offering getting it's fair share of airtime out there in electronic music dance land, especially with quality music like Time Dancer and my personal favorite Score Four (just love that drone).
